It's a school vacation sandwich over the next several days. Most New Englanders get one week while many New Hampshire (and Quebec) skiers and riders get another. There are still plenty of values to be found on the slopes and trails.
One of the longest-running events in the Mount Washington Valley is the Feb. 22 Chocolate Festival on the trails of the the Mount Washington Valley Ski Touring and Snowshoe Center. Enjoy hand-dipped chocolate strawberries, chocolate truffle cheesecake, chocolate chip cookies and many more chocolate delights while skiing, snowshoeing or even driving to each of the inns and businesses participating in this sweet experience between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $20 when purchased in advance or $25 on festival day, and include a trail pass and the tour treats.
Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Maine, continues its budget-loaded values to stay alive with $15 Saturday Night Fever tickets from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 21. If you find yourself at Sugarloaf Feb. 21, consider bidding at the Carrabassett Valley Academy's Big Raffle and Auction in the Sugarloaf Inn (tickets required).
The first Patrick Comer Courage Foundation Race takes place Feb. 21 at Wachusett. The pro-style slalom race features cash and prizes to the top 10 male and female competitors. There is a $50 donation to participate. Sign up at www.comercourage.org.
A visit to Bousquet's web site — www.bousquets.com — will net Berkshire skiers and riders some savings. There's a $10 Wednesday night ticket (good by printing out a coupon, expires Feb. 28) and a Thursday night $10 ticket (no coupon). You can snag a $30 weekend ticket, too, through the site.
Use a map and compass to find your way around on skis or snowshoes during the Feb. 21 Ski Orienteering Event at Vermont's Craftsbury Outdoor Center. There will be various lengths of courses — 3 km, 6 km and 10 km — for competitors of all abilities. National Ski Orienteering Team member Adrian Owens will set the courses.
