Host Vermont maintains Carnival lead

University of Vermont sophomore Franz Bernstein (Unterthingau, Germany) won the men’s 10K Nordic Classic at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt., and UVM sophomore Meg Ryley (Toronto, Ont.) won the women’s slalom at Stowe Mountain Resort to lead the way for the Catamounts on the second day of the Vermont Carnival on Saturday.
Vermont leads the team standings with 687 points while Dartmouth is second with 660 points going into Sunday’s final day of competition.
The victory for Ryley was her fourth straight. For the second straight day, UVM junior Lyndee Janowiak (Manistee, Mich.) followed up Ryley with a second-place finish. Universityof New Hampshire senior Veronique Archambault-Leger (Verdun, Quebec) placed third.
Bernstein’s win was his first of the season and the second in his career. In second place was Dartmouthjunior Nils Koons (Sydney Maine). Middlebury freshman Dylan Grald (Lebanon, N.H.) was third.
In the women’s 5K Nordic Classic, Dartmouth’s Ida Sargent was the winner, followed by Vermont sophomore Caitlin Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska). Dartmouth junior Rosie Brennan (Orleans, Vt.) was third.
In the men’s slalom, Dartmouth junior Ace Tarberry (North Conway, N.H.) was first, followed by Colby junior Vincent Lebrun-Fortin (Montreal, Quebec) and New Hampshire sophomore Paul Atkinson (Toronto, Ont.).
The Vermont Carnival comes to a conclusion on Sunday at Trapp Family Lodge with the women’s 10K freestyle at 10:30 a.m. and the men’s 10K freestyle at 12:15 p.m.
On Friday, Vermont sophomores David Donaldson (Toronto, Ont.) and Ryley earned giant slalom wins at Stowe Mountain.
Donaldson’s win was the 12th of his career and his fourth in five starts this season. Ryley won her third straight race before making it four straight on Saturday.
Vermont senior Erik Gilbert (Richmond, Vt.) added a second-place finish in the men’s giant slalom. Dartmouth sophomore Trevor Leafe (Monroe, N.H.) placed third.
Janowiak (Manistee, Mich.) and senior Kara Crow (Stowe, Vt.) followed up Ryley with a second- and third-place finishes, respectively, for a Catamount sweep.
