N.E. skiers set for Alpine Championships

by PR Wire Report/

The 2010 U.S. Alpine Championships are scheduled to open Saturday, March 20, with several New England skiers competing.

The even will be held on Whiteface Mountain, just outside Lake Placid, N.Y.

Bode Miller (Franconia, N.H.) will not compete after shutting down his season earlier this month to focus on his health after grabbing three medals in Vancouver.

Olympic bronze medalist (super-G) and Dartmouth student Andrew Weibrecht will also be unable to compete due to a dislocated shoulder.

"Taking bronze at the Olympics was such an incredible experience, but it didn't really set in until I was able to take that medal back to Lake Placidto share it with all my family and friends," said Weibrecht, who was honored with a Feb. 26 parade down Main Street Lake Placid. "It would have been perfect to wrap up my competition year at home, but I'll still be there to support my teammates and the hundreds of racers from across the country gunning for U.S. bragging rights."

New Englanders expected to compete include Jimmy Cochran (Keene, N.H.), Nolan Kasper (Warren, Vt.), Leanne Smith (Conway, N.H.) and Chelsea Marshall (Pittsfield, Vt).

Races open Saturday, March 20 at on Draper's Drop with men's and women's super-G followed by slalom Sunday, March 21, men's giant slalom on Monday, March 22, and women's giant slalom on Monday, March 22.
