Massachusetts native Tyler Jewell claimed the men’s parallel giant slalom title on Friday at the U.S. Snowboarding Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
"To cap the season off with being U.S. champion, I am super proud of that," said Jewell.
Vic Wild (White Salmon, Wash.) finished the race second and Darren Ratcliffe (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was third.
"All the guys were really gunning and I had a tough heat with Vic to win the race, and it's great to be the national champion," Jewell said in a U.S. Snowboard Team press release.
The day held some extra special meaning to Jewell, who wasn't just racing for himself.
"I had extra motivation this race, for sure. Last weekend I heard that my old coach Jay Masterpool's son Jesse was in a motocross crash and passed away on Saturday," Jewell said. "I just wanted to go out and go fast every run. I worked on the ranch for Jay. He was my coach and he always brought his son to the camps and he was my wingman when I worked.
"It's such a bummer but to be able to try to honor him in that way, that was extra motivation."
With the season now wrapped up, Jewell is looking to get back on the horse as soon as he can.
"I'm really looking forward to next year and standing on the podium of World Cups," Jewell said.
In the women’s race, Lindsay Lloyd (Centerville, Utah) was the winner, followed by Alexa Loo and Megan Farrell, both of Canada.
Heather Herde (Oxford, Conn.) placed fourth.
