It's not easy being in the shadow of a giant like Sunday River, but this mid-size area has always had a loyal following among local families and a fair number from a distance. One reason is the mountain, which allows even novices to ski all of its 1,050 feet of vertical. There are a few steep runs, but most are novice to intermediate. With a parking area that surrounds two sides of the base lodge, even late arrivals don't need a shuttle to get to the lodge. The kids don't get lost and the friendly atmosphere makes everyone feel like part of the family. The mountain operates Thursday through Sunday and is in a three-year program to upgrade snowmaking and trails.
