Sunday statement: Snowrider fashionistas up their game at Sunday River

Sunday River Resort, located in beautiful western Maine, is the home mountain to snowriders seeking their own level of adventure.

The snow gods love to blanket the eight interconnected peaks in the sweetest snow, and Sunday River’s extensive snowmaking system ensures there is never a bad snow day. Sunday River is my go-to resort because of its powder stashed glades, terrain parks, adrenaline-inducing black diamonds and corduroy cruisers. With trail options for every ability level, Sunday River is the ultimate playground for skiers and riders.

While Sunday River is renowned for its incredible snow and beautiful views, there is much more to discover while there. Altitude without attitude always has been a hallmark of the Sunday River vibe, and each year the resort adds new options that elevate guest experiences.

Newly opened at the Grand Summit Hotel, the Last Run Room is an après and on-snow lounge that can be accessed from the hotel or via the Moon Struck Trail at the base of White Cap Peak. Offering inspired, shareable plates served in heated igloos and A-frame huts alongside raging fire pits, the Last Run Room is the latest from renowned chef Harding Smith and Sarah Smith of The Rooms Restaurants in Portland. The food has an Asian and French flare to it, with spice and umami employed to captivate the senses.

Delicacies such as roasted quail eggs, roast oysters with locally smoked trout roe and smoked salmon dutch babies are baked in little pockets so everyone gets their own.

Surreal “Fish Sticks” come in the form of house-made salt cod brandade and a “corn dog” gets the royal treatment with house-made duck sausage and a local cornmeal-based tempura batter. The warm fragrant rum punch, or orange marmalade bourbon smash, only touches the edge of the après drinks to be enjoyed. A short but concise by-the-bottle wine list is getting much attention.

The Mountain Room at North Peak is the Last Run Room’s sister restaurant and the perfect spot for lunch. Now in its fifth year, the Mountain Room consistently has delivered big-flavored small plates, flowing cocktails and a signature convivial atmosphere. The menu is full of warm, soul-enriching tastes using local products, sure to satisfy any mountain lover. The bar pours local draughts and the best cocktails in the area, highlighted by the local favorite house bloody mary. Both the Mountain Room and Last Run Room deliver legendary food, service and atmosphere. My perfect ski day includes lunch at the Mountain Room and dinner at the Last Run Room. One visit to either and you will be hooked, too.

Beyond the top-notch cuisine, Sunday River’s snow provides the perfect backdrop for fashion-forward skiers and riders who bring individual style statements to the mountain. First and foremost, what we wear when we head out to the lifts needs to protect us from the elements, as no one can have fun if cold or wet. Great snow style makes you feel confident, and confidence is always the ultimate super power.

With skiers such as Lindsey Vonn leading the charge, female alpinists are amping up their style and embracing the strong curves that come with skiing and riding. On-mountain fashion is all about expressing yourself through what you wear and broadcasting your unique style. Exciting developments in fabric technology and construction mean you can wear body-con silhouettes, feminine looks that flatter and celebrate the female form without giving up performance. This means we no longer have to choose between trend-forward designs and being warm, safe and dry. Choose dreamy luxe, go sporty spice, pick retro, stay steezy or explore lines that are fun focused. The important thing is that you find the pieces and brands that make you feel ready to shred in style.

Aster & Birch, Sunday River’s newest shopping destination, is located at the Jordan Hotel and is a must visit for any fashionista. Inside this beautiful boutique, you will find a curated collection of on-mountain and après fashion for men and women. Adorable gifts for babies born to ski and ride also can be found here, along with thoughtful gifts and Maine-made products for your home. Luxe brands such as Skea Limited, Alp & Rock, Krimson Klover, Tonia Debellis and Oats Cashmere are some of the upscale lines found at Aster & Birch.
