The Highland Games at Loon highlights things to do

With kids heading back to school, Labor Day weekend typically marks the end of daily operations for summer activities at most ski resorts. Weekends are still busy for the next few weeks for those looking for scenic chairlift rides, mountain biking and disc golf. Be sure to check your favorite mountain for complete details.

Here are some of the best events happening at or in conjunction with New England ski areas between Labor Day weekend and the end of September.

Aug. 31 Magic Mountain Music Festival

Saturday, Aug. 31, 2:30-10 p.m.: Jatoba will headline Magic’s end of summer family-friendly bash with two 75-minute sets while Ida Mae Specker and Sean K. Preston will also take the stage. Tickets: $25 advance, $30 day of; kids 12 and under free; VIP tables available.

29th Annual Brewers Festival at Mount Snow

Saturday, Aug. 31, 12-6 p.m.: The celebration of beer, music and food to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall is back. Breweries will be pouring a variety of beers and ciders with food options and live music throughout the event.

49th Annual New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival at Loon

Sept. 20-22: The New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival is one of the largest and most diverse Highland Games held in the United States. It is a celebration of Scottish heritage and features athletics, music, whisky tasting, traditional Scottish food and more.

Fox U.S. Open of Mountain Biking at Killington

Sept. 26-29: Professional and amateur athletes from around the world will compete in the open class downhill for one of the largest cash purses in racing. There will also be amateur racing classes in downhill and dual slalom. Spectating is free (spectators will be able to purchase lift tickets to use the Ramshead Express Quad) and sections of the bike park will remain open to the public. Registration to compete is open with early-bird rates valid through Sept. 1.

Burke Fall Foilage Festival

Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m.: Held in East Burke Village on the green in front of Burke Mountain Club is hosted by the Burke Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and the day will also include a craft fair, petting zoo, music, food, a rubber duck race with cash prizes in Dishmill Brook and more.
