Whether you’re coming down from an adventure or heading up for a day of skiing on the flanks of Mount Washington, there is a one-stop shop that can get you sorted.
Located in Jackson, N.H., about nine miles south of Pinkham Notch, where trails lead up to renowned Tuckerman Ravine — widely regarded as the birthplace of extreme skiing in the U.S. — White Mountain Ski Company is a unique business offering sales and rentals for those ranging from looking for their first ski touring experience to the most grizzled mountaineers. By providing a forum to discuss the ever-changing snow conditions on those famous slopes, the shop essentially has become the heartbeat of the New England backcountry skiing scene.
“Tuckerman Ravine has so many elements that make it the backcountry epicenter of the Northeast,” said WMSC owner Andrew Drummond. “There’s simply nothing else comparable. It’s attracted so many ski legends, and every generation leaves its mark.”
Getting to the epic terrain in Washington’s gullies is made easier with all-terrain bindings, boots and climbing skins that allow skiers to trek up to higher elevations. The Sherburne and Gulf of Slides ski trails provide avenues from Pinkham to the awe-inspiring zones above, or can serve as the main objective. While WMSC is open year-round with gear for trail running, biking and more during warmer months, the shop’s main objective is outfitting skiers headed for those trails.
