5 scenic drives to soak in the breathtaking beauty of New England

It’s tough to beat the efficiency of the major interstates when heading to popular tourist destinations throughout New England.

But hidden between them are scenic roads that meander through picturesque villages and deep valleys, and past outcroppings that reveal the vast mountains that draw visitors from around the world.

From Maine’s craggy coast to Vermont’s rolling hills, there’s much to see.

Here are five scenic drives worth leaving the highways. 

Mt. Washington Auto Road, New Hampshire

Originally a carriage road that opened in 1861, making it the first manmade attraction in the U.S., the Mount Washington Auto Road ascends 4,600 vertical feet to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. While it’s less than 8 miles long, the Auto Road climbs through four distinct ecosystems. On a clear day, the 360-degree views are unrivaled anywhere else in New England. Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

The Kancamagus Highway, or the “Kanc,” as it is more commonly referred to by locals, connects the bustling Mount Washington Valley with the town of Lincoln via a 54-mile, remote stretch of mountainous terrain.

There are a number of trailheads and scenic vistas along the way, perfect for stretching the legs and admiring the views. Use I-93 to connect to Route 302 through Crawford Notch for a longer scenic loop. 

Route 100 Scenic Byway, Vt.

Over the course of 216 miles, Vermont’s Route 100 Scenic Byway runs north-south through the state, traversing rolling hills and vast farmland. Along the way, the road passes farm stands, cideries and breweries, making it a classic Vermont experience. While many choose to drive smaller stretches of the byway, it’s worth taking a few days to drive the entire route, stopping to wander around the towns it passes through (like Stowe), and sampling maple syrup and cider donuts.

Route 6A, Cape Cod, Mass.

Route 6A, or Old King’s Highway, runs the entire stretch of Cape Cod on the north side. Unlike previously mentioned scenic drives that focus largely on the surrounding natural landscapes, the Old King’s Highway runs

through historic villages dating back to the 17th century, highlighting the evolution of architecture in New England. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities to stop at local bed and breakfasts, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, all while immersing yourself in New England’s rich history and culture.

Acadia National Park Loop, Maine

The coastal cliffs of Acadia National Park look like they should be found in the Pacific Northwest more than in New England. Driving the loop road that circumnavigates the park is a great way to see the mountainous terrain that drops straight toward the ocean, passing through the occasional fishing village along the way. For the early risers, detour to the summit of Cadillac Mountain to catch one of the earliest sunrises in the country. nps.gov/acad/index.htm
